The current situation regarding the 23-month-old Alfie Evans, a Briton, is receiving international attention. The central issue in this case is the fact that the High Court believes itself to be superior to the rights of Alfie and his parents. For those who are unfamiliar with the situation here is a very redacted version:
Alfie becomes ill and is committed to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool, England. After some time, the hospital petitions the Courts to allow them to, in effect, euthanise Alfie, and is given permission. Alfie's parents oppose the decision. The Judge, Lord Justice Anthony Hayden, dismisses their repeated appeals, siding with the hospital, who claimed that Alfie was brain-dead. After much going back and forth, Justice Hayden pronounces that Alfie's ventilation was to be turned off. It was, and everyone expected him to die within minutes. Well, he didn't. In fact, he has continued to live for over 24 hours. Amongst all this, the Vatican has offered to treat Alfie at its Bambino Gesu Hospital in Rome, and the Pope himself has sent a medical team to England to transfer Alfie to Rome. But, Justice Hayden said no. The Italian Government has made Alfie an Italian Citizen in order to hinder Justice Hayden's death sentence. But, Justice Hayden said no. Alder Hey seems determined to have Alfie murdered, and it may not be without reason. The hospital has a bad history of organ harvesting amongst other scandals. Leaked audio between various persons discussing that the hospital is covering up something big seems to give credence to the idea that something is not quite right here. However, it is just speculation for now. I have been praying hard for this child, commending him to Our Lady. I would ask all my readers do likewise at this time. I shall link to relevant articles below. Please check the News Pages for news today on this and other news. As of publication, the Court of Appeals has again refused Tom Evan's (Alfie's father) appeal for Alfie to go to Italy for treatment. However, Alfie's mother is being represented by a separate barrister, so we will see what happens with her.
